My Dog has Lost His Mind

My dog seems to be about ignorant these days. He was never really super smart, but recently he seems to be even less intellectually blessed.

Over the past several months I’ve noticed that his hearing has gotten pretty bad; he is an old dog after all. Morgan is 11.5 and we got Chewie around the same time as Morgan. Dog years to human years equal eighty and a half years old. So the hearing thing makes sense, but why is he getting dumber?

He’s an outside dog who, during the winter months, pretty much keeps to himself. Now that the weather has changed, more peeps are wandering around and he barks at them. Typical.

The thing is, he has to see them or smell them to know they are nearby. Dogs have poor visual acuity, so he is using his incredible nose to find targets for his racket. His hearing is so bad, he doesn’t know when my truck pulls in the driveway, nor does he know when I’m approaching his house to feed him; unless he sees or smell me.

So why does he bark at me? At ME? Tonight I fed him, watered him, took him some table scraps from the delicious roast Keri made, and when I went to our front yard to gather the trash cans to take to the back, he barks at me.

The wind was blowing from me towards him, so I know he smelled me; he had to have. This isn’t the first time he’s done this either.

Yep, he is surely losing his mind.
