Full Body Scans at the Indianapolis International Airport

I've been quiet for too long. But something has arisen that I feel I MUST speak out against, I must let as many people know about this as is possible.

In response to the December 2009 terrorist attack by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has ordered the use of full body scanners at airports across our nation, including Indianapolis International.

What does this mean to you? Well, these scanners emit very high frequency radio waves that reflect off a person and create a digital image. This image is in effect a nude image of the person being scanned. This means that when you pass through such scanners a digital picture of your naked body is generated for the TSA to view. This is not being done to individuals who warrant a closer examination due to something suspicious, EVERYONE who boards the plane is being forced to suffer this humiliating indignity.

There are a lot of problems with this. The obvious one is that people are looking at pictures of our naked bodies without our knowledge or consent. Secondly, our private medical information is revealed to whomever views these images; colostomy bags, mastectomies, Depends undergarment, breast and penile implants, catheter tubes, the size of breasts and genitals, and a lot more.

Another big problem is that this information isn't as secure as the TSA tries to convince us. As an IT professional I can tell you that no data can be completely secure, and just by the very nature of these images I think we all know that some of them will end up on the Internet for all to see.

But here's the kicker folks; the darn things don't even do a good job of detecting threats. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab had the explosives woven into his underpants, these types of scanners would not have even identified them!

It's time to stand up, speak out, and be heard people! This is a link to a form letter. Print it out and send it to Senator Luger, Senator Bayh, and the Indianapolis Airport Authority. As citizens we simply cannot and should not accept this disgusting assault on our privacy.
