More Fun With the Space Heater

I gave in to my inner geek today at lunch and tackled the problem of our ‘cordless’ space heater. I couldn’t help myself; I have this toolbox full of things for working on electronics; a veritable arsenal of tools spoiling for a new project.

I began by disassembling the hapless heater so that I could fully see how much damage it had suffered. Not bad at all, it was simply a cord blown in two pieces. Not a big deal.

Man that thing was dirty on the inside! Yuck-o! My trusty can of air made quick work of the dust mess, then I could get to work in earnest. I cut off about six inches of cord from the outside, stripped of about the same on the inside, then proceeded to patch things back together. A couple of wire nuts and four zip ties later and I was ready to put the cover back on it.

Keep in mind that it has that blackened area where the cord enters the body, a scar from Sunday night when the cord blew itself apart. I did not attempt to remove this discoloration. A little ‘battle damage’ adds character to the heater; it lends more interest to the piece.

I took it into the bathroom and set it up on the (granite?) counter just in case, plugged it in and turned it on.

Heat, glorious heat! The little bugger started warming me almost instantly. Now I have my space heater back and hopefully will be able to get another five or six years out of the thing. And to think that they say there are no user serviceable parts inside…
